The NATF has grown immensely since our inception in 2016, as the governing body for the sport of competitive axe throwing.
With over 4500 league members, representing 31 best-in-class urban axe throwing locations and the most skilled axe throwers in the world, it's pretty incredible to reflect on as we close out 2018, and we couldn't be more excited for the year to come.
Axescores has tracked over 25 million axes and we have only just scratched the surface in how we plan to bring you all the most detailed stats as well as player, and league, comparisons.
2018 showed us how many of you are ready and excited to travel across the country to compete and we can't wait to bring you four major tournaments in 2019 with varying prize money and styles of entry. Competition is at an all-time high with records being broken all the time in both skills comps and league play.
A special shout out to Straun Riley - winner of the Wison Cup in an incredible final vs. Aaron Gerard to claim victory in this year's National Axe Throwing Championship.
We have been able to make some major hires to support the growth of the NATF and there will be an announcement about an NATF president role in the coming weeks, who will be an absolute game changer for the sport having worked previously in senior roles in both MLS and the NBA.
This is all due to your continued support of the sport of axe throwing and your desire to compete at the highest level.
I thank you for your part in making this a transformational year for NATF. As we continue growing our community and promoting the sport of axe throwing, we will continue pushing to bring it to the next level in 2019! - Matt Wilson

The National Axe Throwing Federation and member locations across the United States were recently featured on Bisnow (Almost) Never Boring. The article described the evolution of axe throwing by stating:
"People have been throwing axes for sport for thousands of years, but the modern concept of a venue specifically dedicated to regulated ax throwing started in 2010, when Matt Wilson founded Backyard Axe Throwing League in Toronto after years of organizing it in his backyard. BATL had grown a following when Matt and Krista Paton visited in 2015, fell in love and co-founded Urban Axes in Philadelphia with partners Stu Jones and Shaun Hurley the following year."
The concept of axe throwing took off immediately in Philadelphia and owners Jones and Paton "opened Urban Axes’ second location in Austin, Texas, on the one-year anniversary of its Philadelphia debut, and have since grown to locations in Baltimore and Durham, North Carolina, with Boston and Cincinnati opening before year’s end. In the first half of 2019, Paton expects to open four new locations, including one in South Philly."
Urban Axes owner, Paton, believes that there are "a lot of comparisons have been made to bowling, and there are many thousands of bowling alleys across the country.” The article concludes by stating that "even if ax-throwing never gains the level of mainstream acceptance as bowling, it has established itself as a viable retail format that can bring in the crowds landlords crave to energize their properties. In today's climate, that is as good as a bull's-eye."

25 MILLION AXES!! Ohhh, baby! Thanks to everyone who’s been a part of this incredible journey to build our growing sport and community. How many axes do you think we’ll get to in 2019?

The National Axe Throwing Federation was recently featured in The Believer Magazine. The magazine wrote an essay on the evolution of axe throwing from the history to the global sport that it is today.

The National Axe Throwing Federation's member LA AX was recently featured in the LA Times.
The article "Ax Marks the Spot at New L.A. Club" by Erin Maxwell describes LA AX as;
"Nestled in the heart of North Hollywood, LA AX is a more than 12,000-square-foot space providing 30 lanes in which to perfect tossing the woodcutter’s weapon of choice. After a grand opening earlier this year, LA AX has staked its claim to become part of a new wave of competitive gaming in Los Angeles, hoping to turn the curious into casual throwers and casual throwers into “axperts.”
She also highlights the feedback from the local community by featuring a quote from local Alexa Oliphant; “I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t drawn to the primal aspects of ax throwing — after all I was raised on Lord of the Rings," a recent convert to the sport. "But once I actually got trained up by the staff at LA AX, I was blown away by how much fun it was to learn technique, posture and actually getting better at hurling metal hatchets at targets."
